My Journey Through Science, Spirituality and Technolog
My Journey Through Science, Spirituality and Technology
From Matter and Energy to Consciousness and Divinity
By Dharma
The outward journey: matter and energy
My professional journey began with science and engineering: observing the physical world, applying the laws of thermodynamics, and developing processes that transform matter and energy into useful outcomes. Chemical engineering taught me to respect mass and energy balances, practical evidence, and the discipline of testing ideas against reality. Yet even as science explained more of the world around me, a deeper question remained: who is the one observing it?
The mirror: “I witnessed me”
An unexpected experience before a mirror became a turning point. I saw an image, but for a moment recognition did not arise. Seeing was present; the familiar identification with the person in the mirror was absent. Then memory returned, and with it the thought, ‘That is me.’ The experience left a lasting question: if recognition depends on memory, what was aware before recognition returned? I came to understand this experience through Self-enquiry, not as a laboratory proof, but as something profoundly meaningful in my own life.
The two lights
In God Plays Dice – Two Lights, I distinguish two forms of illumination. External Light makes the material universe visible and accessible to scientific investigation. Inner Light is my name for the awareness through which perception, thought and even the act of observing are known. Science asks what the universe is made of and how it behaves. Self-enquiry asks: who is the knower? These questions are different, yet they meet in the human search for understanding.
From consciousness to divinity
The sequence that has stayed with me is: Matter, Energy, Consciousness, and then Divinity. Matter and energy belong to the measurable domain of science. Consciousness introduces the immediate fact of experience. Divinity expresses my spiritual understanding of the underlying unity of existence. These are not presented as four experimentally established stages of physics; they are the way I describe the widening scope of my enquiry. In this spiritual sense, when I speak of ‘I’, I mean Ishwara—not the personal identity associated with my name.
Ramana Maharshi and Self-enquiry
Sri Ramana Maharshi’s question ‘Who am I?’ gave language and direction to an enquiry that had already begun within me. Rather than treating the mind’s descriptions as the final answer, Self-enquiry turns attention toward the awareness in which thoughts arise. I have come to see the diversity of experience as belonging to minds and perceptions, while the unity of awareness is the central intuition of my spiritual life. This is a personal philosophical conviction, not a claim that quantum physics has demonstrated a universal observer.
Technology as an expression of purpose
My work on Carbon Recycling Technology grew from decades of process-engineering experience and a commitment to addressing industrial carbon emissions. The concept seeks to capture carbon dioxide and convert it, with hydrogen-rich synthesis gas and renewable hydrogen, into methane for repeated use in an engineered carbon loop. Its performance must be judged through stoichiometry, thermodynamics, energy requirements, emissions accounting, economics and independent validation. My spiritual experience did not supply the engineering equations; it changed the meaning of the work for me. The ambition became larger than personal achievement.
One journey, distinct ways of knowing
I do not believe that spirituality should replace scientific method, or that science must dismiss the significance of inward experience. Engineering demands evidence and reproducibility. Spiritual enquiry asks questions about identity, awareness and meaning that are not settled by a process flow diagram. Holding both disciplines with care has allowed me to work outwardly on technology while continuing the inward question that began at the mirror.
Closing reflection
External Light reveals the universe. Inner Light reveals the Self. My life has moved between these two lights: from the laws governing matter and energy to the mystery of awareness, and from that enquiry back into practical service through technology. The words may be many, but the search remains one: to understand what is real, and to act responsibly within it.
